Château Margaux 1976.
The 1976 heat wave was the hottest European summer of the 20th century.
In Bordeaux, the average temperature from June to September was 20.8 °C.
The only hotter years were 1947 and 1949, which produced great wines.
The 1976 vintage could have been outstanding but the rainy end to the summer diluted the grapes and forced Margaux and other wine producers to harvest quickly before rot set in.
Margaux was severely under-resourced at this time.
The Ginestet family, who had owned Margaux since 1925, were forced to sell the estate after the Bordeaux wine market crashed in 1973-74.
Their final vintage was 1976.
From 1977, Margaux’s owner was André Mentzelopoulos.
