Chateau Margaux was originally called “La Mothe de Margaux” (the Margaux mound).
In 1705, the London Gazette advertised the first auction of great Bordeaux growths: 230 barrels of “Margose”.
The 1771 Château Margaux vintage was the first claret to appear in a Christie’s catalogue.
This 1977 vintage produced at Château Margaux a wine with surprising finesse and concentration.
- A sharp frost at Easter reduced the crop size.
- Then the summer months were cool and wet.
- Later, the weather greatly improved in September and October.
- This allowed a small crop of reasonably ripe grapes to be harvested late but in good conditions.
- The picking began on 10th October 1977.
- But also due to the joint involvement of André Mentzelopoulos, who had taken over the reins of the estate in July 1977.
- And also Emile Peynaud, whom Mentzelopoulo had called in, as soon as he had arrived in July 1977.
- Peynaud brought his precious advice during the vinification and blending.
- The colour of Château Margaux 1977 is stunning.
- It is still very dark for the vintage.
- The bouquet is well developed, fine, complex and moderately rich.
- Château Margaux 1977 is quite smooth, not very powerful, and it finished on a slightly firm note.
- It should be enjoyed now.
