Château Margaux 1940
They harvested this rare wine during the summer of 1940 while war engulfed Europe, making production challenging and records sparse.
Older bottles like this often show signs of age, such as slightly damaged capsules and/or scuffed, damp-stained or (part-) missing labels .
This is perfectly normal and does not mean that the wine is faulty or damaged, or that the bottle is a counterfeit or fake.
John Avery, Master of Wine
The Averys are one of Britain’s great wine families.
They founded their eponymous fine wine business in Bristol in 1793, and it continues to the present day.
John’s father Ronald (1899-1976) ran the company from 1923 and – atypically for the time – frequently visited wine regions.
In particular, he went to Bordeaux, where he would selected the casks he preferred.
By the late 1930s Averys had a list that included seven vintages – including the great 1921 – of Château Cheval Blanc.
At this time it was little-known to British wine drinkers.
With Harry Waugh, a friend and rival then working for Harveys, Averys were the first to import Pétrus into Britain.
John Avery had a lifelong interest in the theatre and seed-funded many West End productions, including some of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s works.
I only met Mr Avery twice but on each occasion he was charming and enjoyable company.
