Château Margaux 1972.
The 1972 Bordeaux vintage was notorious for the very acidic wines that were produced and the very high release prices – up to four times the price of the much better 1970 wines.
Peter Sichel noted in his contemporary report on the 1972 vintage that “….even before the world ran out of petrol it ran out of sugar”, which was needed to increase the alcohol content of wines that were “a little weak in constitution”.
However, Château Margaux noted its 1972’s “nose was superb, very complex, reminiscent of some beautiful, whole-cluster Burgundies.”
Whole-cluster (or whole-bunch) winemaking involves fermenting entire grape clusters (including the stems) rather than destemming the grapes first.
This is a very unusual for Bordeaux wine, though uniquely Margaux has traditionally left a tiny fraction (reportedly 0.05%) of stems in the ferment.
