The Château Margaux 1997 is an elegant and balanced wine, considered a success for a generally mixed vintage.
The 1997 vintage is a blend of approximately 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot.
Margaux 1997 came first in a tasting held by Liquid Asset:
“All were very nice drinking now but many, Margaux and Ducru for sure, for considerable keeping.
They may be like the ’53s, drinking well from start to finish.
Overpriced at the outset, these wines can now be real bargains.”
After a particularly dry and warm start to the year and an early but long, drawn-out flowering, July brought dry and hot weather, and August delivered rainy and very hot conditions, resulting in the threat of disease in the vines.
Fortunately, at the beginning of September, hot and very dry weather arrived and continued until the end of the harvest.
The team began picking on 15th September 1997.
The generally adverse weather conditions during the month of August kept the grapes from acquiring the concentration achieved in great vintages.
However, the exceptional weather in September and during the harvest contributed to producing an excellent level of ripeness.
This 1997 vintage wine impresses with its elegance and harmony on the palate, featuring ripe fruit flavours like blackberries, raspberries, and cassis, with well-integrated, silky tannins and a fresh, long finish.
All that is missing in fact is a little density and depth in order to make it a truly great vintage.
It drinks well now but can also age for several more years.
