Château Latour exclusively uses “vieilles vignes” (old vines).

These vines have an average of 60 years-old in the “Enclos”, which contains the Gravettes, Sarmentier, and Pièce de Château vineyards.

The heart of the Enclos is the only terroir that, every year, produces the concentration that we expect of Château Latour.

Here, the Cabernet Sauvignon (accounting for more than 90% of the blend) achieves optimal expression.

Latour 1997 came first in two separate tastings held by Liquid Asset:

“All the wines were excellent.

These wines are incredible values and have some bottle-aging potential…

The 1997 vintage was somewhat controversial and followed the well regarded 95 and 96s and was very difficult for the growers due to heavy rain and humidity July and August.

When first offered, 1997 Bordeaux wine was horribly overpriced.

It took discounts of over 50% for the wines to even start selling through to consumers.

Interestingly 1997 Bordeaux wine was another in a series of moderate to poor vintages ending in the dreaded number 7. 1957, 1967, 1977, 1987 and 1997.

That pattern continued with 2007.

Despite this and possibly a result of the selection of wines, these were all delicious, offering mature but by no means aged wines that still had 5-10 years ahead of them.

Once again highlighting how well made Bordeaux from the top Chateau rarely disappoints.

In terms of pricing these wines today are comparable in cost to recently released 1st and 2nd growths but with the benefit of 20+ years maturity.”

Château Latour 1997

  • Abundant rainfall in the second half of May and a very wet June disrupted flowering.
  • Although veraison started very early (around 7 July), it continued steadily and evenly during August.
  • Violent rain storms in August caused the size of the grapes to increase considerably.
  • Fortunately, favourable weather returned in September and enabled the harvest to be picked in excellent conditions.
  • The Château Latour 1997 harvest took place in blazing sunshine, from 8–25 September
  • The grapes were in perfect health and surprisingly ripe.

Château Latour 1997 was of good quality but could not compete with the superbly concentrated vintages of 1995 and 1996.

Well-coloured, very fruity, smooth and moderately structured, Château Latour 1997 is a balanced wine, full of charm and accessible when it was fairly young.

Finally, Arden Fine Wines sells this 1997 red wine – Château Latour 1997.
