Château Mouton Rothschild – From Marquis to Barons
Château Mouton Rothschild took its present name after Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired it in 1853.
For many years, however, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners.
Moreover, they were unwilling to make the journey to a then-neglected region.
It was a red-letter day when, in 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild took in hand the destiny of the estate.
Then, in 1924, Baron Philippe decided to bottle all the wine at the château.
Previously, the merchants took the wine in barrels.
This decision, soon embraced by others, meant that the château had to increase its storage space.
Therefore the architect Charles Siclis designed the spectacular Grand Chai (Great Barrel Hall) at Mouton, which they built in 1926.

The 1991 Mouton Rothschild label was by the Japanese artist Setsuko.
Setsuko was born in Japan in 1942 and was the daughter of an ancient Samurai family.
She received a Western education, but also learned the traditional arts of her native country : music, poetry and shimai dancing.
In Tokyo in 1962 she met Balthus, painter of the Turkish Room and many other major works, and very soon afterwards went to join him in Rome, where he was President of the Villa Medici.
It was there, after their marriage, that they entertained all the great writers, painters and film-makers of the day.
They also bought the mediaeval castle of Monte Calvello in the countryside outside Rome.
Since 1977 they have lived in Switzerland, creating a new environment for her work in the Grand Chalet at Rossinière.
For the Mouton Rothschild 1991 label, Setsuko retells the timeless story of wine: the grapes that once were blossom and became fruit; the wine in the decanter; and the pleasure in drinking it.
Arden Fine Wines in London offers this 1991 red wine gift.
