After an early flowering, the summer was hot and sunny, with isolated rainy spells: optimal conditions to the ripening of the grapes, but also to the onset of downy mildew.

From 20th August–10th September, the very dry weather brought the ripening and the concentration of the grapes to exceptional levels

Then heavy rains came until the end of September.

The picking began on 22nd September.

Practically the same scenario as in 1998 was produced in 1999: an exceptional spell of fine weather during August and early September, then heavy rain.

This prevented the grapes from reaching the ripeness levels of great vintages and, like in 1998, caused a slight dilution.

In both cases, the wines were “almost” great vintages.

It is clear that a period of fine weather in August is of crucial importance, whereas rain, even heavy rain, during the harvest is not necessarily a handicap.

Château Margaux 1999 shows great finesse, intensity and aromatic complexity.

The nose has both great purity and great classicism.

On the palate, it has firstly delicacy and suppleness, then fatness and density, before finishing with great length, displaying the real power of the wine.

Château Margaux 1999 is an extremely charming Château Margaux – a great success.

A brief history of Château Margaux

People in the XII century referred to Margaux as “La Mothe de Margaux” (the Margaux mound).

The old name didn’t happen by chance.

In a flat region like the Médoc, the slightest “mound” easily stood out.

This is because sloping land that ensures good drainage always produces the greatest wines.

In 1152, England advanced into Aquitaine and continued until 1453.

Thus, this new market benefited Bordeaux wines.

In the ten years from 1572 to 1582, Pierre de Lestonnac completely restructured the property.

At the end of the XVII century, Château Margaux occupied 265 hectares.

A third of the estate planted vines, which remains the case today.

Then in 1705, the London Gazette advertised the first auction of 230 barrels of “Margose”.

Later, the 1771 vintage became the first “claret” to appear in a Christie’s catalogue.

In 1896, Count Pillet-Will, Margaux’s owner, employed Pierre Moreau to manage the property.

Subsequently, Pierre Moreau’s most important innovation involved bottling the wine at the château, which he adopted in 1924.

This guaranteed authenticity for the buyers.

In 1950, the Ginestet family acquired the whole property.

In 1977, André Mentzelopoulos bought the property.

The Mentzelopoulos family continues to own Margaux.
