Château Mouton Rothschild – From Marquis to Barons
Château Mouton Rothschild took its present name after Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired it in 1853.
For many years, however, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners.
Moreover, they were unwilling to make the journey to a then-neglected region.
It was a red-letter day when, in 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild took in hand the destiny of the estate.
Then, in 1924, Baron Philippe decided to bottle all the wine at the château.
Previously, the merchants took the wine in barrels.
This decision, soon embraced by others, meant that the château had to increase its storage space.
Therefore the architect Charles Siclis designed the spectacular Grand Chai (Great Barrel Hall) at Mouton, which they built in 1926.

The 1999 Mouton Rothschild label was by Raymond Savignac (1907-2002).
Born in Paris of parents from the Aveyron region, who kept a café-restaurant, he displayed a gift for caricature from a very early age.
“The less you show, the more you say”, asserted Savignac.
With clean lines, vivid and contrasting colours, and backgrounds from which everything superfluous has been removed, his keen-witted gaze goes straight to the point.
At the same time his style has the immediacy of a gag and the self-evidence of a successful slogan. At once figurative and poetic, Savignac’s art seems to be borne along on a current of eternal youth.
Seventy-five years after Jean Carlu, the poster designer who created the first artist’s label for Mouton Rothschild in 1924, the wheel has come full circle with the design for the 1999 vintage by another master of poster art, Savignac.
With a wink and a kick of his heels, the ram, the Mouton totem, invites us to the pleasure of wine-drinking and briskly dismisses the closing millennium.
