Château Lafite Rothschild
Jacques de Ségur first planted the vineyards in the late 17th century, steeping Lafite Rothschild wine in a history that began then.
Subsequently, Nicolas-Marie-Alexandre de Ségur, the Marquis de Ségur, who inherited the estate, marketed the wines to the nobility of France and across Europe in the early 18th century.
As a result, when Lafite entered the court of Versailles, demand for the wine reached record heights.
Consequently, the Marquis de Ségur earned the title “The Prince of Vines.”
Later, Baron James de Rothschild purchased the Château in 1868.
Since then, the Rothschilds have owned the estate.
Furthermore, Lafite Rothschild possesses one of the largest vineyard areas in the Médoc, with 112 hectares that yield about 45,000 cases annually.
Moreover, Pauillac sits on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, approximately 40km North of Bordeaux.
With this, the estuary’s tempering influence and a great diversity of soils originating from both the Massif Central and the Pyrenees provide exceptional climatic and geological conditions to produce outstanding wines.
In addition, Lafite Rothschild lies to the north of the Pauillac appellation, bordering Saint Estèphe.
Notably, Lafite’s best terroirs stretch across the 50ha Plateau des Carruades to the west of the Château.
This plateau, which is the highest point of the Pauillac appellation, drains well and enjoys optimal sun exposure.
Its clay-gravel soils offer excellent water regulating abilities and provide optimal ripening conditions for the Cabernet Sauvignon.
Some 4.5 ha planted in the neighbouring Saint Estephe appellation count among the oldest vines of the property.
They deliver year after year grapes of outstanding quality for the Grand Vin.
