The original name for Château Margaux was “La Mothe de Margaux” (the Margaux mound).

In 1705, the London Gazette advertised the first auction of great Bordeaux growths, featuring 230 barrels of “Margose.”

The 1771 Château Margaux vintage became the first claret to appear in a Christie’s catalogue.

After an early flowering, the summer of 1964 proved to be very favorable, with hot, dry weather.

September brought particularly high temperatures, which allowed the grapes to ripen excellently.

However, starting from October 5th, rain fell continuously for three weeks.

Workers began picking on September 21, 1964.

Those wine growers who finished the harvest before the rain arrived felt immense relief.

This led many of them to choose the safer option of early picking for several years afterward.

Conversely, producers who harvested after the rain vowed never to be caught off guard again.

This deep-seated fear compelled many wine growers to rush the start of picking in subsequent years.

Possibly this explains why certain vintages, such as 1970 and 1975, which growers harvested hastily, turned out to be somewhat disappointing.

At Château Margaux in 1964, the team moved with a sense of urgency, yet they took their time.

About half of the crop was harvested before the rain, while the other half unfortunately fell victim to the downpour.

The last grapes picked suffered significantly from rot.

Château Margaux 1964 reflects the consequences of this mixed picking.
