Montrachet is an Appellation d’origine contrĂ´lĂ©e (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for white wine made of Chardonnay in the CĂ´te de Beaune subregion of Burgundy.

Interestingly, it straddles the border between the two communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet and produces what many consider to be the greatest dry white wine in the world.

Moreover, it is surrounded by four other Grand Cru vineyards all having “Montrachet” as part of their names.

However, Montrachet itself is generally considered superior to its four Grand Cru neighbours, and this is reflected in its higher price.

1964 DRC Montrachet

This highly rare and collectible Chardonnay comes from Burgundy, France.

Notably, DRC produced the 1964 vintage as the first time it made a Montrachet from its own parcel of the Montrachet Grand Cru vineyard.

Also, Domaine de la RomanĂ©e-Conti states that the Montrachet offers an “amazing concentration” and a combination of elegance and power.

Interestingly, when it matures, it develops rich and complex flavours.

Additionally, in its youth, it displayed complex aromas of walnut and honey.

Moreover, with proper ageing, it can develop a full, intense, and persistent flavour.

Above all, DRC builds the Montrachet to age, and bottles from the best vintages can mature for decades.

Producers made 1,216 bottles of Montrachet 1964 – the first vintage of this wine produced by DRC.

More importantly, the 1964, as the first-ever DRC Montrachet vintage, holds unique historical significance for collectors.

Ultimately, the market sets prices for this wine, and they will depend entirely on the bottle’s provenance and condition.

You can find this super-rare white Burgundy wine at the award-winning Arden Fine Wines in London.
