Château Haut-Brion is found deep in the Bordeaux suburbs, on the old Arcachon road that runs through Pessac.
It looks the part of a “Premier Cru” wine estate: suave, turreted, surrounded by vines.
The October 1955 Sichel & Cie report stated that “Some (1954) classed growths’ red wines may be of interest to impoverished connoisseurs”.
(Plenty of those around seventy years later…)
It was a so-called “off vintage” (translation: it rained a lot) but the best examples were fruity, easy-going wines that lasted surprisingly well.
This 1954 Haut-Brion is also noteworthy for being in a standard Bordeaux bottle.

From 1958, Haut-Brion put its wine in an embossed bottle with sloping shoulders – like the 1963 shown here.
