The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Grands Échézeaux is a highly sought-after Grand Cru red Burgundy from the historic Grands Échézeaux vineyard.
Produced from a 3.53-hectare parcel of the Grands Échezeaux vineyard, this Pinot Noir captivates with its concentration, elegance, and aging potential.
You can expect typical aromas of red and black fruits, such as cherries and raspberries, along with floral notes, earth, and spices.
As the wine ages, it evolves into more complex notes of musk, leather, fur, and mushroom.
The wine offers a harmonious balance of fruit, acidity, and refined tannins.
Wines from Grands Échezeaux typically command a higher price and exhibit greater complexity and structure.
In comparison to DRC’s Échezeaux cuvée, the wine from Grands Échezeaux generally presents more complexity and harmony.
DRC Grands Échezeaux showcases extraordinary aging potential, requiring you to wait at least four to five years.
DRC Grands Échézeaux 1954
The 1954 vintage for Burgundy overall was not a strong year…
The conditions were rainy, and yields were high, which typically results in diluted, watery wine.
However, the success of the vintage varied significantly by estate, with some exceptional wines produced by leading producers.
Despite the difficult conditions, the better red wines showed good tannin structures and acidity, giving them a degree of aging potential.
Availability of the 1954 DRC Grands Échezeaux is extremely limited.
It is a rare bottle to find due to its age and the poor quality of the vintage.
The price for this vintage is significantly lower than for other, more desirable vintages of DRC Grands Échezeaux.
Nonetheless, DRC hold that their Grands-Echézeaux is perhaps the longest-lived of all their wines.
In 1954, they produced 12,160 bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands Échezeaux.
