Vintage wine 1982 at Arden Fine Wines – Chateau Musar 1982
1982 produced a perfect vintage, if a little dry perhaps, but there was an excellent harvest.
Workers picked grapes by hand from vineyards at 1000 meters above sea level, near the towns of Kefraiya, Aana and Ammiq.
They they transported them 70km by truck over the mountains to the winery in Ghazir.
Winemakers fermented each varietal separately in concrete tanks with natural yeasts.
The wine aged for twelve months in French Nevers oak barrels.
They assemble a blend of roughly equal parts, and they bottle the wine without fining or filtration three years after the vintage.
These bottles rest in the cellars for four more years before release.
Chateau Musar 1982 today
Now fully mature, wine enthusiasts note that the 1982 vintage is lighter and more elegant than the powerhouse 1981.
The aromas include old leather, fragrant tobacco, sweet prunes, and forest floor (sous-bois).
On the palate, it offers a mellow and silky experience, with flavours of strawberries, chocolate, mint, and roasted coffee.
It has matured and is ready to drink, but well-stored bottles like this one at Arden Fine Wines still show remarkable vigour and acidity.
Overall, it presents a savoury and classic red that enthusiasts compare to fine aged Bordeaux or Burgundy.
How best to enjoy Chateau Musar
Chateau Musar reds, bottled unfined and unfiltered, suit vegans.
Moreover, they also possess a richly-textured quality and are likely “throw a crust” and leave sediment in the bottle.
In fact, most fine wines commonly exhibit this feature, and Musar Red vintages over a decade old especially show it.
Ideally, therefore, you should stand the bottles up the night before opening to allow the sediment to settle.
After that, you should carefully decant and then discard the sediment, usually in the last centimetre of the bottle.
Subsequently, you should allow the wine to breathe for an hour.
Finally, serve it best at 18°C with roasts, grills (especially lamb), casseroles, game, and mature cheeses.
