Château Lafite Rothschild wine boasts a history dating back to the late 17th century when Jacques de Ségur first planted the vineyards.

Later, in the early 18th century, Nicolas-Marie-Alexandre de Ségur, the Marquis de Ségur and heir to the estate, marketed the wines to the French nobility and across Europe.

When the court of Versailles welcomed Lafite, demand for the wine soared.

Subsequently the Marquis de Ségur earned the title “The Prince of Vines.”

Then in 1868, Baron James de Rothschild purchased the Château, and the estate has remained with the Rothschild family since.

Lafite Rothschild encompasses one of the largest vineyard areas in the Médoc, spanning 112 hectares that yield about 45,000 cases annually.

The vineyard consists of three main areas:

– The slopes around the Château
– The Carruades plateau to the west
– A 4.5-hectare lot in the neighboring township of Saint-Estèphe

The soil features fine, deep gravel mixed with windblown sand atop a well-drained, exposed tertiary limestone subsoil.

The grape varieties cultivated here include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.

One of Bordeaux’s landmark vintages, which helped to re-establish the region.

After a difficult period in the Seventies, 1982 was a new dawn for Bordeaux, with consistently fine quality across the region.

With hindsight, there was lack of selection and yields were very high.

But the top wines have stood the test of time.

As so often, Lafite – not so special when young – is now majestically superb.

For Lafite, 1982 really marks the beginning of its revival.

This is the best wine made at Lafite since the magisterial 1959.

It also marks the start of a new consistency.

The wine combines power, intensity and beauty with elegance.

The 1982 vintage was relatively early, though not as early as 1976, with rapid flowering attributed to high temperatures.

There was also abundant sunshine in June.

July brought heat and rainstorms.

The véraison (when grapes change colour) was uneven due to cooler August temperatures.

Expect a floral nose with hints of blond tobacco.

The palate offers a pleasing roundness with persistent freshness.

The wine has a balanced structure, delivering a clean, long-lasting finish complemented by silky tannins.
