Château Mouton Rothschild – From Marquis to Barons

Château Mouton Rothschild took its present name after Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired it in 1853.

For many years, however, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners.

Moreover, they were unwilling to make the journey to a then-neglected region.

It was a red-letter day when, in 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild took in hand the destiny of the estate.

Then, in 1924, Baron Philippe decided to bottle all the wine at the château.

Previously, the merchants took the wine in barrels.

This decision, soon embraced by others, meant that the château had to increase its storage space.

Therefore the architect Charles Siclis designed the spectacular Grand Chai (Great Barrel Hall) at Mouton, which they built in 1926.

1982 Bordeaux for sale – Château Mouton Rothschild 1982

The 1982 Château Mouton Rothschild is a legendary, highly collectible Bordeaux wine that collectors and enthusiasts revere for its exceptional quality, richness, and longevity.

Critics like Robert Parker consider it one of the greatest wines of the vintage and have awarded it multiple perfect 100-point scores.

If you consume it now, we recommend decanting the wine for a few hours in advance to allow its complex aromas and flavours to fully open up.

Film director, boxer, art lover, writer, horse-trainer, big-game hunter, and actor John Huston (1906-1987) designed the 1982 Mouton label.

His dedication “In celebration of my beloved friend Baron Philippe’s sixtieth harvest at Mouton” bears witness both to his affection for the man and his attachment to a place that clearly enchanted him.

His watercolour for the Mouton Rothschild 1982 label is one of the last pictures he painted.

Sensual and graceful, using deep, warm colours, it returns in representational style to the symbolic theme of the Ram, leaping in Dionysian joy, accompanied by its inseparable companions, the sun and the vine.
