Jacques de Ségur first planted the vineyards in the late 17th century.

In the early 18th century, Nicolas-Marie-Alexandre de Ségur, the Marquis de Ségur, who had inherited the estate, marketed the wines to the nobility of France and across Europe.

When the court of Versailles introduced Lafite, it reached record heights in demand for the wine.

The Marquis de Ségur earned the nickname “The Prince of Vines”.

In 1868, Baron James de Rothschild purchased the Château.

The Rothschilds have owned the estate ever since.

Lafite Rothschild boasts one of the largest vineyard areas in the Médoc.

It has 112 hectares that yield about 45,000 cases annually.

Critics consider the Château Lafite Rothschild 1959 a legendary vintage.

In fact, they hail it as one of the greatest wines produced by the estate.

Moreover, the outstanding vintage conditions produced the exceptional quality of the 1959 Château Lafite Rothschild.

While some rain fell in mid-September, hot, dry weather followed up to the harvest.

This allowed the grapes to reach magnificent ripeness.

The team fermented the wine in large oak vats and aged it for approximately 30 months in new oak barrels before bottling it at the château.

Furthermore, wine critics have bestowed extremely high scores on this vintage.

Considered a classic example of what a great Lafite can achieve, the 1959 is praised for its complexity, power, and age-defying elegance.

Notably, Robert Parker awarded it 100 points, stating that it “is unquestionably the greatest Lafite-Rothschild that has approached full maturity.”

Additionally, a tasting held by Liquid Asset ranked it first.

Though it is a standout year, the 1959 vintage is sometimes compared to Lafite’s 1961 vintage, which offers a different character.

Some tasters note that the 1959 can be more robust and powerful.
