Having shown a clear passion and flair for winemaking, Serge Hochar had been assisting his father Gaston in the years leading up to 1959; at which point, he was given full control of the winery.
However, it would be some years before his oenological studies in Bordeaux were complete.
Subsequently, he could begin to implement changes with the aim of achieving the highest quality possible at Chateau Musar.

The 1959 Chateau Musar is a rare and highly sought-after vintage red wine from the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon.
First, the winemakers blended Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, and Cinsault grapes to create the wine.
The vineyard workers planted the vines for this wine in the Bekaa Valley, and the producers then left the wine unfiltered and unfined.
Interestingly, Serge Hochar bottled this as his first vintage.
The 1959 is a testament to the longevity of Chateau Musar wines.
Furthermore, this 1959 wine displays a mature, browning colour with a tawny hue.
Then the nose presents aromas of polished oak, with evolving notes of raspberry and strawberry fruit after aeration.
On the palate, it feels powerful, old, and ethereal, with flavours of toffee and oak.
Additionally, critics have compared it to Pedro Ximenez sherry, noting a taste of old wardrobe doors with sweet, evolved fruit.
In 2009, Andrew Stevenson noted its complexity and vibrant, fresh fruit character despite its age.
He quoted Serge Hochar describing a “non-facelifted, non-botoxed, fifty-year-old wine”.
1959 Chateau Musar Red was the first vintage made by the legendary Serge Hochar.
Its longevity and unique evolving character in the glass are notable.
