Montrachet is an Appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for white wine made of Chardonnay.
It is in the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy.
The vineyard straddles the border between the two communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet
It produces what many consider to be the greatest dry white wine in the world.
Four other Grand Cru vineyards surround it, all having “Montrachet” as part of their names.
Many generally consider Montrachet superior to its four Grand Cru neighbours, and this reflects in its higher price.
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet Grand Cru 1982
Tiny, at just 1.65 acres in size and with vines whose average age is 65 years, DRC produces an incomparable Montrachet.
Indeed, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti owns its oldest vines here.
Furthermore, the wine offers a span of drinkability that unmatched in Burgundy.
Montrachet’s reputation is as the greatest dry white wine in the world, so a lot to live up to.
But this wine is always beautiful, be it at six months from barrel or 25 years in bottle.
In addition, the good spring weather in 1982 gave rise to rapid fruit set, followed by a classic summer and a warm start to autumn.
However, they conducted no green harvesting at the time, so the resulting harvest became enormous.
As a result, the 1982 DRC Montrachet features intense aromas of spice, orange peel, hazelnuts, candied almonds, and mint.
On the palate, it provides full-bodied flavours of pear, pineapple, and subtle botrytis.
Nonetheless, the 1982 DRC Montrachet impresses quite a bit today.
Moreover, it displays powerful and exotic characteristics in the glass – especially for a wine of its age – and the 1982 possesses marvellous depth to match its open-knit personality.
Consequently, orange peel, hazelnuts, candied almonds, mint and spice notes meld into the textured, inviting finish.
Overall, it presents a delicious, lush white wine.
Ultimately, the producers created only 4,256 bottles of DRC Montrachet 1982.
