Since it won its first medal in 1862, Château Cheval Blanc has maintained its place as one of the world’s greatest wines.
In 1832, Château Figeac sold 15 hectares (37 acres) to M. Laussac-Fourcaud.
As a result, this became Chateau Cheval Blanc.
Notably, in the International London and Paris Exhibitions in 1862 and 1867, it won medals still prominent on its labels.
Furthermore, the château remained in the family until 1998, when it was sold to Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère.
The late Clive Coates MW described Chateau Cheval Blanc as “the only great wine in the world made predominantly from Cabernet Franc.””
The vineyard area is spread over 41 hectares (100 acres), with 37 hectares (91 acres) planted with a composition of grape varieties of:
- 57% Cabernet Franc
- 40% Merlot
- and small parcels of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon
Red wine for 51st birthday – Château Cheval Blanc 1975
The 1975 vintage established a benchmark year for Cheval Blanc, with the inauguration of the new barrel cellar.
Furthermore, Château Cheval Blanc produced a fine vintage in 1975 with low yields.
As a result, the wine’s austerity in its youth transitioned into a dense, high-quality tannic texture that continues to provide a great deal of pleasure.
In addition, the colour typically appears deep with some brick-red or amber colouring at the rim, which is normal for a wine of this age.
Moreover, cloudy sediment commonly occurs.
Notably, experts note complex and expressive aromas, including Virginia tobacco, candied fruit, dried banana, and orange peel.
Additionally, the wine showcases a smooth, full-bodied palate with rich fruit flavours like red cherry and plum.
Although the tannins can be firm, they do not present dryness, showing a powerful and concentrated style.
Interestingly, some reviewers have detected notes of mint and eucalyptus.
Ultimately, the wine delivers a rich and long-lasting finish.
You can find Château Cheval Blanc 1975 for sale at Arden Fine Wines, which serves as a perfect red wine for a 51st birthday celebration.
