Since it won its first medal in 1862, Château Cheval Blanc has maintained its place as one of the world’s greatest wines.
In 1832, Château Figeac sold 15 hectares (37 acres) to M. Laussac-Fourcaud.
As a result, this became Chateau Cheval Blanc.
Notably, in the International London and Paris Exhibitions in 1862 and 1867, it won medals still prominent on its labels.
Furthermore, the château remained in the family until 1998, when it was sold to Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère.
The late Clive Coates MW described Chateau Cheval Blanc as “the only great wine in the world made predominantly from Cabernet Franc.””
The vineyard area is spread over 41 hectares (100 acres), with 37 hectares (91 acres) planted with a composition of grape varieties of:
- 57% Cabernet Franc
- 40% Merlot
- and small parcels of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon

The weather in 1957 was ok.
However, the frost of 1956 had not fully allowed the vines to recover.
Wine producers achieved honourable quality, especially considering the challenging effect of the previous year’s frost.
The Château Cheval Blanc team started the 1957 harvest on the 3rd of October.
The frost of 1956 reduced yields to a miserable 8 hectolitres per hectare.
Château Cheval Blanc 1957 contains a degree of alcohol of 12%.
The official tasting note from Château Cheval Blanc presented aromas of “plants and cooked vegetables”.
After aeration, the profile shifted toward “prune and fruit brandy,” but noted a “lack of structure” and “relatively high acidity.”
Another reviewer detected a “bretty” nose (an earthy or barnyard aroma from the Brettanomyces yeast), along with other complex aromas of tobacco, black tea, honey, and floral undertones.
The reviewer found the wine to have “amazing structure with great acidity and still strong tannins.”
