Imagine the château at the beginning of the 17th century…
The first Duke of Épernon has just become its owner.
The reputation of this great French admiral was such that as boats passed in front of his estate, they would lower their sails to show their allegiance.
This deep mark of respect gave rise to the château’s emblem, a ship with a griffon-shaped prow.
Its name in Gascon, Bêcha vêla, meaning “baisse voile” (“lower the sails”), later became Beychevelle.
The second Duke of Epernon further added to the legend of Beychevelle…
A great patron of the arts, he invited a troupe of actors to stay and perform at the château.
Among them was the young Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, otherwise known as Molière.
Ever since it was first produced, Château Beychevelle has reflected the elegance and finesse of Saint Julien’s finest vineyards.
Graceful and complex, with a tremendous aromatic richness, Château Beychevelle undergoes a rigorous selection process.
It reveals its character after about ten years, and can be kept for several decades, depending on the vintage.
1975 vintage red wine – Château Beychevelle 1975
The 1975 Château Beychevelle is a mature Bordeaux wine from the Saint-Julien appellation, known for its powerful, classic structure and aging potential.
The 1975 vintage produced “tough,” tannic wines in Bordeaux.
Beychevelle’s 1975 has firmed up over time to become a full-bodied, muscular vintage wine.
Expect a bouquet of ripe, spicy, and savoury notes, including black currant, leather, tobacco, cedar, and earthy mushrooms.
On the palate, the wine reveals black currant and plum fruit, with savory tertiary flavors of cocoa, coffee, and baking spices.
Modern reviews indicate that excellent bottles like these from Arden Fine Wines can still be a delicious.
