Montrachet is an Appellation d’origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for white wine made of Chardonnay.

It is in the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy.

The vineyard straddles the border between the two communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet

It produces what many consider to be the greatest dry white wine in the world.

Four other Grand Cru vineyards surround it, all having “Montrachet” as part of their names.

Many generally consider Montrachet superior to its four Grand Cru neighbours, and this reflects in its higher price.

DRC Montrachet Grand Cru 1986

Tiny, at just 1.65 acres in size and with vines whose average age is 65 years, DRC produces an incomparable Montrachet.

Indeed, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti owns its oldest vines here.

Furthermore, the wine offers a span of drinkability that unmatched in Burgundy.

The 1986 Burgundy vintage was generally mediocre for red wines, marked by high yields and inconsistent quality.

However, the 1986 vintage was superb for whites in Burgundy, offering high acidity that has allowed this wine to age gracefully for decades.

For the best white wine experience in 2026, focus on 1986 white Burgundy from top estates like DRC.

At 40 years old, it has a deep golden colour.

Initially, the nose has aromas of honey, smoked nuts, and toasty oak.

Then, on the palate, you can expect flavours of ginger, lemon, and apple cider with a viscous texture.

Overall, it represents the essence of Chardonnay, extremely full-bodied and concentrated, yet remarkably well-balanced in spite of its massive size.

Ultimately, the producers created only 2,940 bottles of DRC Montrachet 1986.
