Montrachet is an Appellation d’origine contrĂ´lĂ©e (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for white wine made of Chardonnay.
It is in the CĂ´te de Beaune subregion of Burgundy.
The vineyard straddles the border between the two communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet
It produces what many consider to be the greatest dry white wine in the world.
Four other Grand Cru vineyards surround it, all having “Montrachet” as part of their names.
Many generally consider Montrachet superior to its four Grand Cru neighbours, and this reflects in its higher price.
DRC Montrachet 2010 price
Tiny, at just 1.65 acres in size and with vines whose average age is 65 years, the wine remains incomparable.
It offers a span of drinkability that is unmatched in Burgundy.
It is sometimes difficult to reconcile the aching beauty of the DRC 2010 wines with the frequently traumatic temperament of so much of the growing season.
Nevertheless reduction in quantity is often favourable to quality as it takes less good weather to ripen a reduced crop.
A hail storm over Santenay on September 12th brought heavy rain to the Montrachet area engendering rot – some of it happily noble – in the white wine vineyards.
Nonetheless, 2010 is a great white wine vintage like 2004 and 2008.
DRC Montrachet 2010 has a rich, gold colour.
The nose has a restrained perfume of rich, sweet, subtly ripe, golden fruit.
Then the palate is tautly-flavoured with fabulous tension and a clean, mineral, zesty power.
It has subliminal concentration and broad, sustained elegance to the finish.
This is a DRC Montrachet of finesse as well as profound depth.
Overall, it is a lovely wine that will take long cellaring.
Ultimately, the producers created only 2,028 bottles of DRC Montrachet 2010.
