Montrachet is an Appellation d’origine contrĂ´lĂ©e (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for white wine made of Chardonnay in the CĂ´te de Beaune subregion of Burgundy.
Interestingly, it straddles the border between the two communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet and produces what many consider to be the greatest dry white wine in the world.
Moreover, it is surrounded by four other Grand Cru vineyards all having “Montrachet” as part of their names.
However, Montrachet itself is generally considered superior to its four Grand Cru neighbours, and this is reflected in its higher price.
1973 DRC Montrachet
The 1973 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet is, indeed, a rare, highly-regarded Grand Cru white Burgundy.
Moreover, winemakers crafted it from 100% Chardonnay, known for its complexity and ability to age exceptionally well; this is true despite the vintage’s general reputation.
Interestingly, the 1973 vintage, while not universally acclaimed for all Burgundy wines, produced an exceptional Montrachet from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) estate.
Furthermore, reviewers consistently praise its complexity, richness, and remarkable longevity.
For instance, tasting notes from CellarTracker mention a “creamy nose with smoke and saline” and “developed grapefruit citrus.”
In addition, another experienced taster on Reddit described “heavy notes of honey covered almonds and hazelnuts.”
Despite its age, tasters note its amazing structure with lively acidity and a finish that seems endless.
In fact, some bottles, even with low fills or a slightly bronzed colour, can offer an “unforgettable experience.”
Ultimately, the winery produced 3,240 bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet 1973.
You can find this super-rare white Burgundy wine at the award-winning Arden Fine Wines in London.
