Montrachet is an Appellation d’origine contrĂ´lĂ©e (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for white wine made of Chardonnay in the CĂ´te de Beaune subregion of Burgundy.

Interestingly, it straddles the border between the two communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet.

Here it produces what many consider to be the greatest dry white wine in the world.

Moreover, it is surrounded by four other Grand Cru vineyards all having “Montrachet” as part of their names.

However, Montrachet itself is generally considered superior to its four Grand Cru neighbours, and this is reflected in its higher price.

1974 DRC Montrachet

The 1974 DRC Montrachet is a rare and highly sought-after white Burgundy wine that Domaine de la Romanée-Conti produces.

Notably, they make it primarily from Chardonnay grapes grown in the Montrachet Grand Cru vineyard.

Moreover, collectors value it highly, as DRC produces a very limited quantity of this wine.

Also, the 1974 vintage is old and has aged for decades.

Notably, this otherwise undistinguished vintage holds historical significance: 1974 marked the first year that Aubert de Villaine guided the domaine.

According to a review on oenofile.co.uk, the wine displayed a “radiant golden colour” and a fine, precise aroma of white truffle, ripe wheat, and apricot.

The palate displayed a fine acid structure, concentration, and an “extremely long and gently forceful” aftertaste.

However, wine enthusiasts agree that the 1974 vintage of DRC wines is not technically perfect.

But perfectly stored bottles – like this one from Arden Fine Wines – can impress with their serious quality and vibrancy even after decades.

Ultimately, the winery created 2,520 bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet 1974.

You can discover this super-rare white Burgundy wine at the award-winning Arden Fine Wines in London.
