In 1832, M. Laussac-Fourcaud purchased 15 hectares (37 acres) from Château Figeac.

This transformation created Chateau Cheval Blanc.

Then in the International London and Paris Exhibitions in 1862 and 1867, it earned medals still prominent on its labels.

Subsequently, the family retained the château until 1998.

Then Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère bought it.

The late Clive Coates MW described Chateau Cheval Blanc as “the only great wine in the world made predominantly from Cabernet Franc.”

Cheval Blanc spreads its vineyard area over 41 hectares (100 acres), with 37 hectares (91 acres) planted with a composition of grape varieties of:

  • 57% Cabernet Franc
  • 40% Merlot
  • and small parcels of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon

1974 wine price – Château Cheval Blanc 1974

The 1974 Château Cheval Blanc is a Saint-Émilion red wine that is considered a pleasant old bottle to drink now, despite being from a lesser vintage year.

Wine aficionados know it for its unique blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

However, heavy rains during the harvest in September and October made the 1974 vintage difficult for Bordeaux.

Consequently, they produced a large crop but overall lower quality compared to other years.

According to Château Cheval Blanc’s own tasting note, the tasters found the wine astonishingly tannic and concentrated when young.

Nevertheless, today they describe it as “very light in both colour and in structure.”

Moreover, well-stored bottles have received positive reviews.

In fact, experts often note the wine as one of the best from the 1974 vintage.

Furthermore, they describe it as a pleasant old bottle to drink at this time.

Additionally, the nose presents pure and fresh notes of leather, smoke, salt/mineral, cassis, tobacco, and pencil/graphite.

On the palate, it offers flavours of sweet fruit, leather, coffee, tobacco, meat, and blood.

Ultimately, it has a light to medium body, with a silky texture and non-aggressive tannins.
