The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) produces the highly sought-after Grand Cru red Burgundy, Grands Échézeaux.
The DRC Grands Échézeaux vineyard is a 3.53-hectare parcel.
You can expect typical aromas of red and black fruits, such as cherries and raspberries, along with floral notes, earth, and spices.
As the wine ages, it evolves into more complex notes of musk, leather, fur, and mushroom.
The wine presents a harmonious balance of fruit, acidity, and refined tannins.
Wines from Grands Échézeaux typically command a higher price and exhibit greater complexity and structure.
In comparison to DRC’s Échezeaux cuvée, the wine from DRC Grands Échézeaux generally presents more complexity and harmony.
DRC Grands Échézeaux showcases extraordinary ageing potential, requiring you to wait at least four to five years.
DRC Grands Échézeaux 1986
The 1986 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Grands Échézeaux Grand Cru is a fully matured, exceptionally rare Burgundy Pinot Noir from a notoriously uneven vintage.
The 1986 growing season across Burgundy was highly volatile, marked by a humid summer and a massive storm during the late September harvest that triggered widespread rot across the region.
However, DRC relied on ruthless grape sorting and intensive extract management to triumph over the conditions.
US wine critic Robert Parker noted the 1986 Grands Échézeaux as one of the few “superstars of this vintage,” with an unusually deep colour, plenty of extract, and firm structural tannins that required decades to fully integrate.
Overall, DRC created 11,204 bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands Échézeaux in 1986.
As a result, this vintage is very scarce now.
