Château Mouton Rothschild – From Marquis to Barons

Château Mouton Rothschild took its present name after Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired it in 1853.

For many years, however, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners.

Moreover, they were unwilling to make the journey to a then-neglected region.

It was a red-letter day when, in 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild took in hand the destiny of the estate.

Then, in 1924, Baron Philippe decided to bottle all the wine at the château.

Previously, the merchants took the wine in barrels.

This decision, soon embraced by others, meant that the château had to increase its storage space.

Therefore the architect Charles Siclis designed the spectacular Grand Chai (Great Barrel Hall) at Mouton, which they built in 1926.

The Château Mouton Rothschild 1986 stands out as a legendary, powerful Bordeaux blend.

Wine enthusiasts widely consider it to be one of the finest wines of the 20th century.

The winemakers crafted the wine to be full-bodied and rich, with a dense, powerful structure.

It has firm, tightly-knit tannins that have mellowed with age.

The flavours include an array of jammy fruit, wild berries, and blackcurrant liqueur.

Additionally, it showcases notes of mint, mocha, and toast, leading to an incredibly long finish.

While you can enjoy it today (often after a long decant), we believe it still has decades of life and will continue to evolve further in the bottle.

Bernard Séjourné (1947-1994) designed the 1986 Mouton label.

He was born in Haiti where his family worked as planters.

He studied painting and the history of art first in Jamaica and later in the United States, while still preserving close ties with his island home.

His trio of masks rising from the dark in their “white negritude” for the Mouton Rothschild 1986 label exemplifies the finest of his work.
