The oldest document mentioning Chateau Latour dates from 1331.

It is an authorisation granted to Gaucelme de Castillon by Lord Pons to build a fortified tower in the parish of Saint Maubert.

As a result of successive marriages and inheritances, Château Latour became the property of Alexandre de Ségur.

In 1714, a barrel of Château Latour was worth 4-5 times more than a barrel of typical Bordeaux wine.

By 1729, the ratio had risen to thirteen and by 1767 to twenty.

The estate gradually came to specialise in wine production, with 38 hectares of vines in 1759 and 47 hectares by 1794.

The wine of Latour is made exclusively from “vieilles vignes” (old vines) with an average of 60 years-old in the Enclos, Gravettes, Sarmentier, and Pièce de Château vineyards.

The heart of the Enclos is the only terroir that, every year, can produce the depth, elegance and concentration that we expect of Château Latour.

It is here that the Cabernet Sauvignon (accounting for more than 90% of the blend) can achieve optimal expression.

These wines need time – often a decade – before they begin to be ready for drinking.

Latour is also known for having the ability to produce fine wines even in difficult years.

Château Latour 1986

  • The winter was rainy and fairly mild.
  • So budbreak was quite late, on 14 April.
  • Then May was very hot, producing an explosion of growth and the vines partially caught up.
  • Flowering began on 16 June and continued in excellent conditions.
  • Overall, the summer was superb and very dry; the vines developed remarkably.
  • For the first time at Latour, a general crop-thinning was conducted in order to improve concentration.
  • Early September was very fine but deteriorated in the middle of the month with rain that made the grapes swell.
  • Fortunately the sun came back at the end of the month with easterly winds.
  • This avoided the risk of grey rot and accelerated ripening.
  • Eventually, the harvests took place from 30 September–16 October in magnificent sunshine.

Château Latour 1986 is remarkably concentrated with “tight” tannins, characteristic of Latour in great years.

Rich, fruity, spicy, long on the palate, with mint and mineral aromas.
