Wine enthusiasts widely recognise the 1966 vintage as an outstanding and long-lasting year for Port.
Experts often consider it a top post-war vintage, producing balanced and elegant wines that rival the more famous 1963 vintage.
After decades of bottle ageing, the 1966 vintage ports have developed notable complexity while retaining their structure.
60 year old wine for sale – 1966 Dow’s Vintage Port
The 1966 Dow’s Vintage Port enthusiasts consider a superb expression from one of the finest declared vintages of the 20th century.
Robert Parker notably praised the wine, stating: “The 1966 is a top success for that vintage; in fact, it would be hard to find a better port from that year”.
Vinous has scored it 96 points, highlighting its “intense, deeply concentrated cherry liqueur, toffee… and a vibrant, spicy overtone”.
Wine experts know it for its longevity and structure, and it drinks beautifully now, though it has the potential to age further.
1966 produced an excellent, generally declared vintage, sometimes even considered superior to the famous 1963.
The wine exhibits the classic Dow’s “drier and more austere” house style compared to its peers.
This gives it a distinctive edge, with fine-grained, peppery tannins and a graceful acidity that keeps it vibrant and fresh.
The wine offers an elegant and complex bouquet of dried figs, sultanas, cedar wood, tobacco, and dark chocolate.
On the palate, it has layers of stewed black fruits, nutmeg, and a long, dry, spicy finish with hints of orange peel and roasted nuts.
As a mature Vintage Port, it requires decanting to remove the natural sediment before serving.
It is ideally served slightly below room temperature and pairs well with mature cheeses, roasted nuts, or dark chocolate.
