Pétrus stands as an iconic wine estate in the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux, France.

It is renowned for producing some of the world’s most prestigious and expensive red wines.

Wine enthusiasts celebrate it for its Merlot-based wines, which are known for their power, complexity, and longevity.

People considered Pétrus a minor Pomerol estate until hotel owner Madame Edmond Loubat gradually acquired it.

She became the sole owner by 1945.

From 1943, she collaborated with the negociant (merchant) Jean-Pierre Moueix.

Together, they established Pétrus as the world’s most renowned and sought-after red wine.

The Moueix family took on the role of majority shareholders of Pétrus in 1969.

Pétrus’s intense and long-lived character arises more from its unique terroir than from heavy-handed winemaking.

The 20-hectare area of deep blue clay soils with a high iron content features the Pomerol “plateau.”

More than half of this unique “boutonnière” (“button hole”), a mound at 40 metres above sea level, Pétrus occupies.

This gentle slope allows rainwater runoff during wet vintages.

Additionally, the moisture-rich layers below nourish the vines in dry years.

Winemakers create Pétrus more or less entirely from Merlot, though they apparently include up to 20% Cabernet Franc in older vintages.

1966 Petrus Pomerol

The 1966 Petrus Pomerol is a mature, highly sought-after red wine known for its depth and complexity.

Wine enthusiasts note the 1966 vintage for being a powerful, structured wine that is more reserved and masculine than some other vintages.

It offers aromas of melted caramel, liquorice, roasted herbs, sweet currant, cherry, graphite, bay leaf, orange peel, and morello cherry.

The palate presents medium-bodied, slightly austere but very complex flavours, with fine, silky tannins and notes of chocolate.

Some bottles showcase a rustic character with truffle and plum notes.

The finish delivers focus and precision, with good length.
