Vintage wine 1997 at Arden Fine Wines – Chateau Musar 1997

“It was the slowest and best fermentation we have ever had at Chateau Musar, especially between the 15th and 30th September with 80% of the harvest in the cellar.

I tasted the wines on the 18th November. Almost all malolactics were finished and wines looked ready for drinking.

Very, very beautiful wines and the white wines are just as beautiful as the reds.

All wines are big and perfectly balanced whatever the cepage – Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, Cinsault, Merwah and Obaideh.

Definitely a vintage to follow very closely.” – Serge Hochar

Chateau Musar 1997 today

1997 Chateau Musar exhibits a rich, warm colour; however, it is now paling towards the rim, with a smoky nose full of spices and fruits.

On the palate, you can taste mixed berry fruits – cherries, redcurrants, pomegranates, and, additionally, Christmas spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.

Moreover, good acidity, along with good tannin levels, creates a wine of classic structure, which ultimately has long ageing potential.

How best to enjoy Chateau Musar

Chateau Musar reds, bottled unfined and unfiltered, suit vegans.

Moreover, they also possess a richly-textured quality and are likely “throw a crust” and leave sediment in the bottle.

In fact, most fine wines commonly exhibit this feature, and Musar Red vintages over a decade old especially show it.

Ideally, therefore, you should stand the bottles up the night before opening to allow the sediment to settle.

After that, you should carefully decant and then discard the sediment, usually in the last centimetre of the bottle.

Subsequently, you should allow the wine to breathe for an hour.

Finally, serve it best at 18°C with roasts, grills (especially lamb), casseroles, game, and mature cheeses.
