Chateau Musar wine 2002 at Arden Fine Wines
The 2002 growing season was unique; after four years of drought, the region saw a long, cold winter followed by a hot August.
This resulted in grapes with high sugar, acidity, and tannin levels, producing a wine that is “larger” and more concentrated than typical Musar vintages.
It is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Cinsault, and 10% Carignan.
Chateau Musar 2002 today
It has a deep crimson or blood red colour.
The nose features intense aromas of spicy red fruits, cedar, and plum.
On the palate, you can expect notes of Christmas cake spices, figs, dates, and stewed plums balanced by lively acidity and silky tannins.
Overall, this wine is currently in its prime drinking window.
How best to enjoy Chateau Musar
Chateau Musar reds, bottled unfined and unfiltered, suit vegans.
Moreover, they also possess a richly-textured quality and are likely “throw a crust” and leave sediment in the bottle.
In fact, most fine wines commonly exhibit this feature, and Musar Red vintages over a decade old especially show it.
Ideally, therefore, you should stand the bottles up the night before opening to allow the sediment to settle.
After that, you should carefully decant and then discard the sediment, usually in the last centimetre of the bottle.
Subsequently, you should allow the wine to breathe for an hour.
Finally, serve it best at 18°C with roasts, grills (especially lamb), casseroles, game, and mature cheeses.
