Vintage wine 1989 at Arden Fine Wines – Chateau Musar 1989

The 1989 is an exceptional vintage.
Exceptional because with war raging around them, the Chateau Musar winery was hit on several occasions and the deep cellars used as air raid shelters, yet still wine continued to be produced.
A dry winter followed by a mild summer led to an exceptional vintage, despite the surrounding troubles.
When it was released, Serge commented that the nose on the 1989 vintage was remarkably fragrant and attractive, with an intriguing note of roasted peanut, smoked meat and cumin.

Chateau Musar 1989 today

Chateau Musar 1989 today is mature and savoury with notes of cherries, leather, tobacco, and coffee.
It has smooth tannins and high volatile acidity (VA), which adds a characteristic “lift” to the aroma.

How best to enjoy Chateau Musar

Chateau Musar reds, bottled unfined and unfiltered, suit vegans.

Moreover, they also possess a richly-textured quality and are likely “throw a crust” and leave sediment in the bottle.

In fact, most fine wines commonly exhibit this feature, and Musar Red vintages over a decade old especially show it.

Ideally, therefore, you should stand the bottles up the night before opening to allow the sediment to settle.

After that, you should carefully decant and then discard the sediment, usually in the last centimetre of the bottle.

Subsequently, you should allow the wine to breathe for an hour.

Finally, serve it best at 18°C with roasts, grills (especially lamb), casseroles, game, and mature cheeses.
