Château Lafite Rothschild

Lafite Rothschild wine steeped in a history that started in the late 17th century, when Jacques de Ségur first planted the vineyards.

In the early 18th century, Nicolas-Marie-Alexandre de Ségur, the Marquis de Ségur, who inherited the estate, marketed the wines to the nobility of France and across Europe.

When Lafite entered the court of Versailles, demand for the wine reached record heights.

The Marquis de Ségur earned the title “The Prince of Vines”.

In 1868, Baron James de Rothschild purchased the Château.

The Rothschilds have owned the estate ever since.

Lafite Rothschild possesses one of the largest vineyard areas in the Médoc, with 112 hectares that yield about 45,000 cases annually.

Pauillac sits on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, approximately 40km North of Bordeaux.

With the tempering influence of the estuary and a great diversity of soils originating from both the Massif Central and the Pyrenees, Pauillac boasts exceptional climatic and geological conditions to produce outstanding wines.

Lafite Rothschild lies to the north of the Pauillac appellation, bordering Saint Estèphe.

Lafite’s best terroirs stretch across the 50ha Plateau des Carruades to the west of the Château.

This plateau, which is the highest point of the Pauillac appellation, drains well and enjoys optimal sun exposure.

Its clay-gravel soils offer excellent water regulating abilities and provide optimal ripening conditions for the Cabernet Sauvignon.

Some 4.5 ha planted in the neighbouring Saint Estephe appellation count among the oldest vines of the property.

They deliver year after year grapes of outstanding quality for the Grand Vin.

1989 vintage wine for sale – Château Lafite Rothschild 1989

The 1989 Château Lafite Rothschild is a highly-regarded, elegant, and complex Bordeaux blend red wine.

It is a classic Pauillac wine with notes of cedar, dark berries, and leather, offering a long, harmonious finish.

This was the vintage that changed winemakers’ thinking on when to pick.

It was the earliest harvest since 1893 but, more importantly, the one that taught Bordeaux that it could no longer pick grapes simply on sugar levels.

Many grapes harvested using this rule of thumb turned out not to be phenolically ripe.

Since then, growers and producers have been tasting grapes to gauge exactly when the tannins in the skins are ripe.

There is little doubt that, in general, the 1989s are more concentrated than the 1990s and that this suits Cabernet Sauvignon.

Consequently this has typecast 1989 as a Left Bank year.

But Lafite produced a wine that is rich and concentrated, yet still quintessentially elegant in approachability.

It offers layers of mature red and black fruit, green peppercorn, and spice, with a long, clean, and elegant finish.

Finally, the award-winning Arden Fine Wines sells this 1989 vintage wine – Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1989.
