Vintage wine 1975 at Arden Fine Wines – Chateau Musar 1975

People will remember the year as the start of the Lebanese Civil War, which would last fifteen years.

As the warm, sunny summer of 1975 drew to a close and the vendage approached, the winery’s press needed last minute repairs.

By 24th October, the workers had picked all grapes and fermentation was well underway.

The team de-stemmed and fermented the three grape varieties separately in concrete tanks, then racked and aged them for 12 months in French Nevers oak barrels.

Moving closer to the equal parts blend that would become Musar in the following years, the winemakers blended and bottled 1975 Chateau Musar in 1978.

The winery aged the bottles in the cellars prior to release.

The 1975, 1969 and 1967 styles are similar and appear to be more Cinsault dominated.

These vintages look much paler in colour than other, more Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant vintages.

Certainly a more forward vintage of Chateau Musar – it offers an extraordinary bouquet with a touch of the sauvage.

Tasting note

The 1975 Chateau Musar red is a significant vintage, notably produced at the beginning of the Lebanese Civil War. Wine experts praise this vintage for its elegance and maturity.

While some reviewers in the past found the wine fragile or slightly dried out, recent tastings confirm its longevity and complexity.

It presents a complex and evolving bouquet.

Early notes include violets, dried fruit, tobacco, and cedar.

More recently, tasters have found notes of cedarwood and grilled meat, along with red fruit.

People often describe the nose as resembling an old-world wine, with some comparing it to an aged Rioja or Bordeaux.

This is a full-bodied red wine with a smooth, velvety texture.

It offers flavours of plum, spices, blackberry, and fig, alongside tobacco notes.

The finish is long and clean, with a complex and delicate balance of acidity and tannins.

For an anniversary or special occasion, this unique and collectible wine can still provide great pleasure.
