Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) is a legendary estate in Burgundy, France.
It produces some of the most sought-after and expensive Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines in the world.
Therefore Romanée-Conti vineyard is its most famous Grand Cru.
It is known for producing wines of exceptional finesse, richness, and longevity.
Interestingly, the Romanée-Conti vineyard is a small, 1.81-hectare plot in the heart of the Grand Cru belt in Vosne-Romanée.
Notably, its mid-slope position and shallow, iron-rich limestone soil contribute to the creation of a Pinot Noir with unsurpassed elegance and silky texture.
The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti exclusively owns the vineyard as a “monopole.”
The winemakers produce a 100% Pinot Noir.
They limit production to only about 6,000 bottles made per year, contributing to its scarcity and high value.
1969 Romanée-Conti
The 1969 Romanée-Conti is a red Burgundy that winemakers produced in an excellent vintage.
Wine enthusiasts know it for its age and complexity, with tasting notes that include intense aromas of forest floor and spices, alongside fruit flavours and a savoury finish.
Interestingly, experts describe the nose as having a range of complex aromas including sous bois (forest floor), caramel, brown sugar, and spice.
Moreover, reviewers on CellarTracker also noted scents of rosehip, cured jerky meats, balsa wood, and Asian spices.
The structure almost completely resolves, with high acidity contributing to a focused and sweet finish.
Also, tasters often describe it as feeling silky and graceful on the tongue, but with surprising intensity.
In addition, reviewers have given it high scores (up to 96 points), calling it “completely balanced”.
Above all, it pairs ideally with rich meats like duck, goose, and game birds.
Because DRC bottled their wines barrel by barrel until the mid-1980s, collectors can find significant variation between bottles.
DRC produced 7,220 bottles of Romanée-Conti in 1969.
Therefore, availability remains very limited.
