Montrachet is an Appellation d’origine contrĂ´lĂ©e (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for white wine made of Chardonnay.
It is in the CĂ´te de Beaune subregion of Burgundy.
The vineyard straddles the border between the two communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet
It produces what many consider to be the greatest dry white wine in the world.
Four other Grand Cru vineyards surround it, all having “Montrachet” as part of their names.
Many generally consider Montrachet superior to its four Grand Cru neighbours, and this reflects in its higher price.
DRC Montrachet 2005
Tiny, at just 1.65 acres in size and with vines whose average age is 65 years, DRC produces an incomparable Montrachet.
Indeed, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti cultivates its oldest vines here.
Moreover, this wine provides a timespan of drinkability that is unmatched for white Burgundy.
Montrachet’s reputation is as the greatest dry white wine in the world, thus it has a lot to live up to.
However, this wine always shines, be it at six months from barrel or after 25 years in bottle.
The 2005 Domaine de la RomanĂ©e-Conti (DRC) Montrachet Grand Cru is an exceptionally rare, highly coveted 100% Chardonnay white Burgundy that’s widely considered to be one of the ultimate expressions of the Montrachet vineyard.
It achieved a perfect 100-point rating from Wine Spectator, which highlighted its exotic aromas of apricot, pineapple, and citronella.
It has an intense, rich nose.
Then the palate has flavours of mint, vanilla, toasted oak, buttery textures, and a vibrant, lingering mineral finish.
Ultimately, DRC released only 3,415 bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet 2021.
Therefore it is currently one of the most difficult bottles of white wine to acquire globally.
