The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) Échézeaux is a highly sought-after Grand Cru red Burgundy from the historic Échézeaux vineyard.

Made from Pinot Noir, this wine stands out as one of the more powerful and robust offerings from the DRC portfolio while still maintaining a sense of elegance.

The Echézeaux vineyard sits on the slopes above Grands Échezeaux, between the villages of Vosne-Romanée and Vougeot.

The soil in the Échezeaux climats (plots) features a more diverse and complex composition than that of Grands Échezeaux.

It consists of Bajocian marls mixed with gravel and alluvial deposits, exhibiting varying altitudes and gradients.

DRC cultivates approximately 4.67 hectares of the Echézeaux vineyard, which spans a total area of about 37.69 hectares.

The majority of DRC’s holdings focus on a highly regarded plot called Les Poulaillaires.

Wine enthusiasts consider the wines from DRC’s Échezeaux plots exquisite examples of top-tier Burgundy.

They showcase bright red fruit, spice, and savoury characteristics.

DRC Échézeaux 1964

The esteemed Domaine de la Romanée-Conti produced the 1964 DRC Échézeaux, a rare and highly sought-after red Burgundy.

In 1964, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti produced 11,349 bottles of this vintage.

While light rain fell in September, it aided the development of the tannins.

Then the vineyard workers completed the harvest by early October when heavier rains began.

Ultimately, this vintage proved superior to 1963, with some outstanding examples, including the 1964 DRC Échézeaux.

Therefore some wine enthusiasts consider it the best of the decade.

A CellarTracker user noted in 2022 that a well-stored bottle was in “amazing condition,” with a “lovely complex sous-bois nose with rich strawberry fruit” and a “soft completeness” on the palate.
