A brief history of Graham’s

Originally trading in textiles, William and John Graham accepted 27 barrels of port in payment of an outstanding debt in 1820.

Consequently, inspired by this wine, they decided to devote their energy to producing the best port wines from the Douro Valley, and this is how Graham’s Port was born.

Furthermore, Graham’s acquired Quinta dos Malvedos in 1890.

As a result, Malvedos has been a cornerstone of their wines ever since – a truly unique estate with an outstanding reputation for producing exceptional wines.

1945 Graham’s Vintage Port – 81 year old wine gift

All the major Port houses declared 1945 as a superlative Port Vintage; however, Cockburn was the one exception.

Moreover, the quality in the Douro Valley reflected the quality of most other growing regions in Europe.

Furthermore, wine experts consider it one of the superb ‘reference years’ by which they judge all other Vintages.

In addition, these full-bodied wines with fantastic structure are wonderful long-lasting wines and serve as the example that all other Vintage Ports must match to earn top year status.

Additionally, blenders sourced 1945 Graham’s Vintage Port from wines from Quinta dos Malvedos and Quinta das Lages, as well as a small number of other top vineyards in the Pinhão and Rio Torto valleys.

Consequently, producers created a very small production of no more than 115 pipes, which would be 6,700 9-litre cases today.

Finally, contrary to the usual practice of shipping in pipes for bottling at destination, the producers bottled the 1945 entirely here in Gaia, due to the shortage of glass in England after the war
