Gaucelme de Castillon received an authorisation from Lord Pons to build a fortified tower in the parish of Saint Maubert.

The Mullet family held the estate until the late 17th century.

While the leasing system gradually gave way to direct use of the land, the winemaking situation changed very little.

Alexandre de Ségur acquired Château Latour as a result of successive marriages and inheritances.

In 1714, a barrel of Château Latour commanded a price 4-5 times higher than a barrel of typical Bordeaux wine.

By 1729, the ratio rose to thirteen and by 1767 to twenty.

This flourishing trade gradually led the estate to specialise in wine production, with 38 hectares of vines in 1759 and 47 hectares by 1794.

The producers make Château Latour exclusively from “vieilles vignes” (old vines) with an average age of 60 years in the “Enclos”.

The heart of the Enclos is the only vineyard that, every year, produces the depth, elegance and concentration that we expect from Château Latour.

These wines need time – often a decade – before they become ready for drinking.

Château Latour also earned a reputation for producing fine wines even in difficult years.

The Château Latour 1945 wine resulted from some extremely difficult weather; however, favourable conditions followed.

In particular, significant frosts occurred on 1-2 May 1945, and as a result, the severe effects impacted the vines.

Furthermore, after the war, the vineyard resembled nothing like what it is today: it lacked replanting, improvement, or fertilisation.

At that time, in fact, the average yield reached 15–20 hectolitres per hectare, and this mainly came from old vines.

Despite this, a difficult vinification produced the resulting 54 barrels of Latour, which were rich and concentrated.

Consequently, this vintage became one of the greatest vintages of Latour.

When tasting (or drinking) this great wine, a spicy nose presents itself, with very structured eucalyptus in the mouth, accompanied by fruit and substance.

Moreover, a long finish delivers wonderful lingering aromatic flavours.

It has remained ready to drink since the late 1970s and, as such, has stayed highly concentrated and full of charm.
