In 1832, M. Laussac-Fourcaud purchased 15 hectares (37 acres) from Château Figeac.
This transformation created Chateau Cheval Blanc.
Then in the International London and Paris Exhibitions in 1862 and 1867, it earned medals still prominent on its labels.
Subsequently, the family retained the château until 1998.
Then Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère bought it.
The late Clive Coates MW described Chateau Cheval Blanc as “the only great wine in the world made predominantly from Cabernet Franc.”
The vineyard area is spread over 41 hectares (100 acres), with 37 hectares (91 acres) planted with a composition of grape varieties of:
- 57% Cabernet Franc
- 40% Merlot
- and small parcels of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon

A cold, damp winter and spring was followed by rain during the harvest in early October.
However, the summer turned out to be reasonably warm.
The harvest-time rain diluted the grapes and prevented them from reaching their full potential.
This resulted in a vintage that lacks the structure and concentration of stronger years.
They produced quite low yields (19 hectolitres per hectare) but achieved a high degree of alcohol (13%).
The château entirely bottled this vintage for the first time in its history.
Some tasters on CellarTracker reported notes of stables, leather, smoke, and graphite, while others mentioned tobacco, coffee, and meat.
One CellarTracker review also noted a fresh, minty opening.
The wine generally presents as full-bodied and soft, with richness and acidity.
The finish often comes across as a bit short compared to other, better vintages of Château Cheval Blanc.
Experts do not consider the 1969 Château Cheval Blanc one of the estate’s top vintages.
However, some bottles may still provide an interesting glimpse into the past with mature, secondary aromas and flavours.
