In 1832, M. Laussac-Fourcaud purchased 15 hectares (37 acres) from Château Figeac.

Consequently, this purchase established Chateau Cheval Blanc, which won medals still prominent on its labels at the International London and Paris Exhibitions in 1862 and 1867.

Moreover, the family owned the château until 1998, when Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère bought it.

Later, Clive Coates MW described Chateau Cheval Blanc as “the only great wine in the world made predominantly from Cabernet Franc.”

Therefore experts consider the Chateau Cheval Blanc vineyard to have three qualities:

  • one-third Pomerol as it is located on the boundary,
  • one-third Graves due to the gravelly soil,
  • and the remaining third is typical Saint-Émilion.

The vineyard area spans 41 hectares (100 acres), with 37 hectares (91 acres) planted with a combination of grape varieties:

  • 57% Cabernet Franc,
  • 40% Merlot,
  • and small parcels of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 1968 Château Cheval Blanc is a highly rare and sought-after red Bordeaux blend from Saint-Émilion.

The vintage itself was challenging for Bordeaux, yet some of the wine has held up well over time.

However, its quality is not considered to be on par with the estate’s finest vintages.

Therefore they sold the wine as simple AOC Saint Emilion.

Despite the challenges of the vintage, some bottles have aged gracefully.

The wine is characterised by aromas of tea, hay, and tobacco, with undertones of red fruit like raspberry.

Some critics have also described complex notes of dark fruits, cedar, and earth.

The palate can offer a harmonious balance of fruit, acidity, and tannins, leading to a smooth finish.

According to a CellarTracker user note from 2008, the palate has mature earth and caramel flavors with a surprisingly long-lasting finish.
