Château Lafite Rothschild history

Lafite Rothschild wine has a history that started in the 13th century.

Furthermore, in the early 18th century, Nicolas-Marie-Alexandre de Ségur, the Marquis de Ségur, who had inherited the estate, marketed the wines to the nobility of France and across Europe.

Consequently, when the court of Versailles introduced Lafite, demand for the wine reached record heights.

As a result, people began to know the Marquis de Ségur as “The Prince of Vines.”

Later, when Baron James de Rothschild acquired Lafite in 1868, the château, its terroir, and its wines already had storied legacies.

Notably, the château earned Premier Grand Cru Classé status in 1855.

Moreover, 150 years ago, Baroness Betty, wife of Baron James, planted the huge oak trees that separate the vineyard from the marshes.

Château Lafite Rothschild vineyard

The vineyard of Château Lafite Rothschild comprises three main areas:

  • a collection of vines surrounding Château Lafite Rothschild
  • those on the Carruades plain
  • a tiny plot in Saint-Estèphe

The surface area is 112 hectares.

The soil consists of fine, deep gravel mixed with windblown sand, resting on a well-drained and well-exposed tertiary limestone subsoil.

Here, viticulturists grow grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.

1968 vintage wine for sale – Château Lafite Rothschild 1968

The Château Lafite Rothschild 1968 is a first-growth Bordeaux from the Pauillac region.

The 1968 vintage is widely considered one of Bordeaux’s most modest and difficult years due to unfavourable weather conditions.

An extremely wet August created a challenging growing season for grapes.

The red wines from this year generally lack character.

The Lafite Rothschild, however, is considered an outlier, crafted with skill and extensive grape selection to produce a wine of subtlety and finesse.
