Château Mouton Rothschild – From Marquis to Barons

Château Mouton Rothschild took its present name after Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired it from the English branch of the famous dynasty in 1853.

For many years, however, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners.

Moreover, they were unwilling to make the journey to a then-neglected region.

Consequently, it was a red-letter day when, in 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, barely 20 years old and the great-grandson of Baron Nathaniel, took in hand the destiny of the estate.

Then, in 1924, Baron Philippe decided to bottle all the wine at the château.

Hitherto, the merchants took the wine in barrels.

This decision, soon embraced by others, meant that the château had to increase its storage space.

The architect Charles Siclis designed the spectacular Grand Chai (Great Barrel Hall) at Mouton, which they built in 1926.

The 1968 Mouton Rothschild label was by the Italian artist Bona Tibertelli (1926-2000).

In 1950 she married André Pieyre de Mandiargues. He brought her into contact with the intellectual avant-garde in Paris.

Her talent then flowered in fantasy pieces: mandrake roots taking the form of giants, monstrous sea-shells.

As a devout Surrealist she practised “decalcomania” or automatic painting.

From 1958, when she moved to Mexico, her work evolved towards abstraction.

She found her greatest fulfilment in a genre devised by the Cubists – collage.

It is worth comparing her “She-Ram” for the 1968 Mouton Rothschild label with Léonor Fini‘s design for the 1952 vintage.

This 1968 red wine is, indeed, brick-red with mahogany highlights.

Furthermore, the nose is subtle and mature, with notes of tobacco, forest floor, dried fruits, old leather, cedar, and gentle spice.

In addition, the palate shows a smooth and mellow texture, with fully integrated tannins and a soft, graceful finish that offers complexity.

However, many bottles of this vintage may show signs of age, including lower fill levels or damaged labels.

Therefore, please contact us for advice.
