Since it won its first medal in 1862, Château Cheval Blanc has maintained its place as one of the world’s greatest wines.
In 1832, Château Figeac sold 15 hectares (37 acres) to M. Laussac-Fourcaud.
As a result, this became Chateau Cheval Blanc.
Notably, in the International London and Paris Exhibitions in 1862 and 1867, it won medals still prominent on its labels.
Furthermore, the family kept the château until 1998, when Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère bought it.
The late Clive Coates MW described Chateau Cheval Blanc as “the only great wine in the world made predominantly from Cabernet Franc.”
The vineyard area spans 41 hectares (100 acres), with 37 hectares (91 acres) planted with a composition of grape varieties of:
- 57% Cabernet Franc
- 40% Merlot
- and small parcels of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon
1942 red wine for sale – Château Cheval Blanc 1942
The Château Cheval Blanc 1942 impresses with its surprising endurance and aromatic complexity.
Overall, it presents a delicate yet resolute character, featuring flavours of preserved cherries, figs, and worn leather.
On the palate, it has silky tannins and a backbone of freshness to support these flavours.
On the whole, collectors consider vintages of this age extremely scarce.
Typically, the labels show signs of soil, and the ullage (the amount of wine in the bottle) falls below that of a younger wine.
