Since it won its first medal in 1862, Château Cheval Blanc has maintained its place as one of the world’s greatest wines.
In 1832, M. Laussac-Fourcaud bought 15 hectares (37 acres) from Château Figeac.
As a result, they created Chateau Cheval Blanc.
Notably, the International London and Paris Exhibitions in 1862 and 1867 awarded it medals still prominent on its labels.
Furthermore, the family owned the château until 1998, when Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère bought it.
The late Clive Coates MW described Chateau Cheval Blanc as “the only great wine in the world made predominantly from Cabernet Franc.””
The vineyard area is spread over 41 hectares (100 acres), with 37 hectares (91 acres) planted with a composition of grape varieties of:
- 57% Cabernet Franc
- 40% Merlot
- and small parcels of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon

The cool and wet 1960 growing season did not provide ideal conditions.
Therefore the team began the harvest later than expected, on 2nd October, due to poor weather.
The pickers ended picking on 15th October and the overall yield reached just 26 hectolitres per hectare.
This meant that Château Cheval Blanc 1960 boasts a 12% degree of alcohol.
The 1960 Château Cheval Blanc presents itself as a mature Saint-Émilion wine with complex tertiary aromas and flavours, such as tobacco, caramel, coffee liqueur, and nuts.
It displays a garnet colour, medium body, and sweet fruit that balances with acidity and a tannic finish.
Then it offers aromas of tobacco, spices, hot milk, cocoa powder, and chocolate.
On the palate, you will find sweet fruit, caramel, mocha, and dried fruit flavours.
The wine maintains a medium body.
Ultimately, it reveals a savoury and classic character that shows its age with complex, mature tertiary notes.
