Since it won its first medal in 1862, Château Cheval Blanc has maintained its place as one of the world’s greatest wines.
In 1832, Château Figeac sold 15 hectares (37 acres) to M. Laussac-Fourcaud.
As a result, this became Chateau Cheval Blanc.
Notably, in the International London and Paris Exhibitions in 1862 and 1867, it won medals still prominent on its labels.
Furthermore, the château remained in the family until 1998, when it was sold to Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère.
The late Clive Coates MW described Chateau Cheval Blanc as “the only great wine in the world made predominantly from Cabernet Franc.””
The vineyard area is spread over 41 hectares (100 acres), with 37 hectares (91 acres) planted with a composition of grape varieties of:
- 57% Cabernet Franc
- 40% Merlot
- and small parcels of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon
1978 wine for sale – Château Cheval Blanc 1978
The 1978 Château Cheval Blanc is a mature, classic Saint-Émilion with leaner, more herbal, and “dainty” profile compared to the opulent modern vintages of the estate.
It was a cool year in 1978, with dry weather at the end of the growing season.
This may have been only an average year in general in Bordeaux, but Château Cheval Blanc 1978 is an outstanding success.
It is fresh and vivacious on the palate, with exceptional power and volume.
The finish is impressively long and refined.
Rich and concentrated, it has hints of chocolate, but never departs from its intrinsic freshness.
It is a medium-bodied “middleweight” with a crisp line of acidity and melted, silky tannins.
It often displays tobacco-infused black fruit.
Château Cheval Blanc 1978 is in a good place now but it will develop for some years.
